Do You Eat Dinuguan? (Pork Innards Cooked In Pork Blood)

Do you eat dinuguan (pork innards cooked in pork blood)? It is so delicious especially with puto (rice cake). I used to love eating dinuguan in my younger days. I remember ordering dinuguan and puto from Goldilocks (a local delicatessen). But when I became a born again Christian in November 2000 and have studied the Bible thoroughly, I stopped eating dinuguan. It was expressly and clearly forbidden by God in Exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy to eat the blood of any living thing for the life is in the blood and God considered it sacred. We were asked once by my teaching pastor in our discipleship training whether we eat dinuguan. I answered vehemently in the negative. He was clearly upset by my answer and debated me vigorously on the issue. Perhaps I thought, he eats dinuguan and he wanted to prove that eating it was justified by God. He cited to me the verse where God declared all edible animals, clean and unclean, could already be eaten. I told him that animal blood was never considered as food and the prohibition still stood. I even told him that all viruses and bacteria that any slaughtered animal may be carrying are in the blood and may be transmitted to those who will eat it. (Certain viruses and bacteria withstand the heat of cooking and can still harm those who will eat the blood of the cooked animal). We ended our debate with the pastor clearly upset and agitated by my bold pronouncement and after that I was the object of his displeasure and indifference.

Lately, as I continued my thorough study of the Bible, my attention was caught by the ruling of the Council of Elders in Jerusalem in the time of Paul and Silas after the death of Jesus Christ. The council, counting James- the brother of Jesus, Peter and the other apostles, made this ruling for all Christians in the places visited by Paul and Silas. "You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality" (Acts 15:29). Ah, I feel vindicated after so many years.

Hi John,
I do not have anything against those who are eating dinuguan. If they are not bothered by it, that's fine with me. I only gave the Biblical reasons why I no longer it dinuguan. Thanks for your visit and comments. God bless you always.

Hi Rose,
Yes, probably because of the Biblical prohibition against eating it. Together with our balut, dinuguan is something that foreigners would probably loathe to eat. Thanks for your visit and comments. God bless you always.

This is actually always the misinterpreted law in the Bible. In the Old Testament, there are 3 kinds of laws that God commanded; the civil law, the moral law, and the ceremonial law. Eating pork was prohibited then as part of the civil laws that God enacted to the Israelites. At that time, they needed civil laws such as our modern times' ; no drunk driving, stopping at red lights, no tresspassing, etc.

When Jesus came, He preached not to abolish the Law (Old Testament) but this does not mean the civil laws then were not to be changed. He did not come to abolish the same moral law that God commanded such as "Do not take my name in vain", "Thou shall not commit adultery,", etc.
Jesus said that what defiles a man is not what goes inside his body, but what comes out of it.
Eating pork is not a no-no or defying any law ,or disobeying God.
At that time, there was no process of sanitizing the pork meat so a civil law of not eating it is required.
Although pork is still deemed as a dirty food because of what it eats, it's not wrong to eat pork even for Christians.

Hi Bambie,
Believe me, I have nothing against those who eat dinuguan. As the saying goes, one man's food is another man's poison. I happen to go to the local wet market everyday and I saw how unsanitary they treat pig's blood. They are placed in unsanitary container and they smell like human pee. The more I decided to myself that I will never eat it again. Thanks for your visit and comments. God bless you always.

Hi Bingkee,
I never said in my post that I do not eat pork. I still do although minus the fat for health reasons. I agree that Jesus said that not what comes into the mouth that defiles a person but what comes out of the mouth. What He was pointing out was the hypocrisy of the religious leaders during His time who were questioning His disciples non observance of the Jewish ceremonial washing of hands before eating. Blood of any creature was never considered by civilized people as food. Only some Chinese and Filipino people and probably some other nations eat the blood of pig and other animal's blood like chicken, snake or dog. Dogs are also being eaten by some minorities in the Philippines and China and elsewhere and there is also no prohibition in the Bible about eating it. We can go on and on. What I am pointing out is that, even in the new Christian dispensation after the death of Christ during the early Christian years as written in the Acts, the Council of Jerusalem gave a strict order to the new Christians in the territories Christianized by Paul and Silas, to wit, "You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality" (Acts 15: 29) I don't think that was an Old Testament pronouncement. I do not want to debate on the matter for eating pork is different from eating the blood of pork. And it is just my humble opinion. If others don't agree with that, I have no quarrel with them. Thanks for your visit and comments. God bless you always.

Jesus really said that not what comes into the mouth that defiles a person but what comes out of the mouth.
I think that Jesus wanted to show that people like to make "own religion" and forget what is the essence. The essence is... Love.
For me Love also means - don't kill, hurt anybody.
I like what I eat... my food smell beautiful... God gave us the best food.
"God said:I am giving you every plant on the face of the whole earth that bears its own seeds. I am giving you every tree that has fruit with seeds in it. All of them will be given to you for food".(Genesis 1:29)

I believe that God knows what is the best for me, for you, for all people and for animals.

Thank you Mel for thought- provoking post.

Btw.
I don't eat meat almost 20 years, and for sure I'm much healthier now, than before.

God bless you Mel!

Hi Mel, I also did not say in my comment that you do not eat pork and never made any statement in my comment that I assumed youdo not eat pork? Did I say that?My comment was based entirely on the Biblical phrase you mentioned about not eating pork.
I assume you were stating Leviticus because in chap 11 verse 7, God forbade the eating of swine (pig). That is why I went on to support it with my explanations. That was an Old Testament civil law---pronounced explicitly there.

In Acts, our pastor explained that it is the food polluted by idols---(which are the merely forbidden by the Jews. This verse is for the Jews as law of their civility that is in reference to what was originally stated in Leviticus and Genesis.

And our pastor said, that law was given to separate the Jews from the Gentiles as food is a form of socialization in those days.

In the Old Testament, pigs were considered unclean and God forbid them because they are unfit for sacrifices.
But we are Christians, who has Jesus Christ who became the sacrifice for our sins.

We are Christians, and Jesus said that he's not keen on us practicing the Mosaic Laws (613 of them) to earn our righteousness. That is why the Jewish rabbis and the Pharisees hated Jesus. Jesus wanted us to be righteous in our hearts by believing in Him as the Son of God.
Paul says we must do away with the written law (referring to the Mosaic law to earn righteousness).
We were already cleansed by the blood of Jesus which Jesus already know before He even died.

I believe it's not only about hypocrisy that Jesus refers what he says in Matthew 15:10-11, because he went on to say on verses 16-20.

For further clafication on what Paul really meant to say in Acts 15:19-20, here's further explanation;
Click this---bhttp://biblebrowser.com/acts/15-20.htm

Meat referred there was food contaminated by idolaters.

In essence, God has redeemed us from all uncleanliness through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The law about swine is Mosaic law in for the Israelites to keep them in check and in order and to be distinct from among other nations.

I am not contradicting your points. I have no right of course. I did not say even a hint that you do not eat pork. My comments were explanations to the points you raised.

Mel Avila Alarilla said...

Hi Krystyna,
I agree with what you said 100%. My post was a question whether people, especially Filipinos and some Asians like Chinese, eat pig's blood. Nobody among my commenters contradicted me in the eating of blood but on the eating of pork. I would like to ask our distinguished foreign pastors if they can countenance to eat pork's blood. That is the crux of the argument and not what comes into the mouth or goes out of the mouth. I feel that my article was twisted beyond the salient point I raised but I give my readers all the privilege and liberty to expound on the issue but please, deal with the issue itself and not any other issues. Thanks for your visit and kind words. I appreciate that. God bless you always.

Hi Shydub,
Honestly, I have no problems with others eating dinuguan. I really loved and ate it before. I am just stating the Biblical, medical and sanitary reasons why I am not eating it now. If others love to eat them, they can always do so to their heart's content. No quarrel there. Thanks for your visit and comments. God bless you always.

Hi Bingkee,
We are discussing points on opposite poles so I'll just say amen and I respect your views. Thanks for your visit and comments. God bless you always.

Isn't it important that forbidding eating blood comes in long before the law of Moses - in God speaking to Noah, and it is reiterated in the new testament after the law of Moses had been superseded? This suggests that it is something that God wishes us to refrain from still. He puts a special value on blood - as every believer knows.

Mel Avila Alarilla said...

Hi David,
Yes, I agree with you. I still believe that the prohibition against eating blood still stays up to the present time. God wants us to show reverence for life and since life is in the blood, thus the prohibition against eating it. Thanks for your visit and enlightened comments. God bless you always.

Hi Lily Strange,
Yes, most people are disgusted to see that dish made out of pig's blood and innards. But many Filipinos and Chinese are eating that. As they say, "one man's food is another man's poison." Thanks for your visit and comments. God bless.

Mel Avila Alarilla said...

Hi Snappy Sparrow,
Thanks for your visit and opinion. God bless.
